Food Safety and Quality

Vision Statement:

The research and education activities of InFERG aim to enhance understanding of the economics of food safety and quality in Canada and internationally. These activities focus on informing policy and business decision-makers and members of civil society regarding the enhancement of food safety and quality in a manner that enhances social welfare.

List of Activities:

The activities of InFERG in the area of food safety and quality focus on analysis of the following key issues:

• Consumer perceptions of food safety and quality and the impact on food choice.

• Management of food safety and quality through the food supply chain.

• Trade impacts of regulations and standards on food safety and quality.

• Firm-level decisions relating to the implementation of food safety and quality controls and management systems.

• Economic costs of food-related illness and the benefits of enhanced food safety controls Research takes as its starting point the theoretical and empirical tools of economics, but is informed and employs approaches from other social science disciplines, most notably social psychology.
